The 2021 BAFA SCF 1 season will get underway with a huge season opener on June 27th when the Thunder take on the Solent Thrashers at Home at Falmer Sports Complex, Brighton.

Head coach Ian Ellis believes this is a big game for the Thunder for several reasons, including avenging the 2019 loss and beating a good friend and head coach of the Thrashers, Steve Rains.

“Due to COVID, this game will give the Thunder an opportunity to see where they are in their development against the newly Premier promoted Thrashers. It’s also an opportunity for coaches whose history is linked for many years to renew their on-field relationships,” he said.

No injury news so the Thunder will have all of their key players available for the season opener.

Wide receivers Jake Smith and Tom Kelly are essential on the offensive side. Giving offensive coordinator, Coach Malcolm Bamsey, an assortment of skills to take advantage of the opposition defence.

Middle linebacker Callum Graham will be key for the Thunder defence, bringing experience and strong leadership skills. Which is vital for setting the tone early and carrying that through for the rest of the season.

Coach Bamsey is confident that this game will set the tone for the Thunder’s 2021 season. “Playing the Thrashers will be our benchmark for the season. They are Division 1 National Champions and now a premier division team. We beat them and we send a message to teams across Division 1 and the Premier division.”

The last time these two teams met was back in 2019 when the Thrashers won a hard-fought battle which ended 32-13 to the Southampton team.

In that 2019 game, the Thunder kept the game close in the first half. They ended the second quarter 17-13 down after an impressive play where QB Eber Kington escaped the pocket and completed the running pass to receiver Ben Kelly who ran in for the touchdown.

Wide receiver Rhys Parfitt was another standout player after he made multiple tough catches, including one in the middle of three Thrasher players. The Thrashers’ exceptional run game was their biggest asset and they showed it in the second half. Despite a valiant defensive effort from the Thunder defence, it proved too much to handle.

A win to start the season would be huge for the guys so make sure to show your support by coming down and cheering them on at Falmer Sports Complex, Brighton on June 27th.

One Team. One Goal.
